This project involved underpinning the existing main space of the heritage hotel to allow construction of a car park and vital building services underneath, deemed necessary by local authorities. The design concept wfas to conceive the roof level of this car park as a podium, allowing the seamless linking of a new dining room, kitchen and external courtyard to the main existing space.

By stripping away previous unsympathetic renovations, the tremendous volume, light and original character of the heritage building was able to be rejuvenated and all three public levels linked by a glass void.

The interior design is a contemporary reflection of Australian coastal gathering spaces, capitalising on the light and coastal breezes afforded by the large existing arch ways.

A palate of contemporary coastal materials were selected including whitewashed and recycled natural timber ceilings, polished concrete floors, natural timber windows and doors, and lightly framed steel furniture. Colour, pattern and texture enrich the design at the smaller scale including handmade tiles to the bar fronts, fabrics to soft upholstery and custom colour patterned carpets that reference the original heritage patterns found in existing balustrades.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which we work, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
